Hi all, me again
>By the way, there's some more dev't and lightning activity behind this lot!
That moved through us with more close lightning. The rain was heavier this
time and the wind gusted a little. Even more lightning out Dalby way so in
a couple of hours it could be here again. Anyway, time for bed...signing

My my, what a lovely night!
After seemingly missing out for the first part of the night, with
Redcliffe and northern suburbs getting some nice lightning/CG's (even
though they were quite far away, they were quite blinding, and lit up
the entire sky!) And then it was the southern suburbs turn, with heavy
rain and more nice lightning/CG's/crawlers...and it looked like the
quaint little suburb of Belmont (eastern suburbs) would miss out - but a
small cell popped up just to the west of Brisbane, and gave me 4 close
CG's (1s or less) and some nice lightning, and very loud thunder - gotta
love the house shaking thunder! :) And the first CG/crack of thunder
(quite unexpected) almost lead me to go and change my pants...
Unfortunately, the rain (and somewhat infrequent lightning) meant no
photographs were able to be attempted.
We received 30.1mm yesterday afternoon from the first line of weak
showers/t'storms - and then from the storms o'night. Not bad,
considering September is our driest month (avg of 31mm). Our total for
Sept is 38.4mm now, already taking us over the average.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..
I ended up getting 16mm from the activity yesterday.. including the 24mm
on had on Tuesday it brings my total for this month to 40mm - my average
for September is 29.8mm..
I have updated BSCH with reports on the last 5 events in SE QLD over the
past week or two.. this includes a radar event loop for the slow moving
severe hailstorm(s) that caused major damage to crops west of Brisbane..
reports include up to 90% of crops totally destroyed, and roofs damage
by hail (official), and up to 15 inches of hail covering the New England
Highway west of Brisbane (unofficial)..
There is also a radar event loop and lightning detection images for the
showers and thunderstorms that occurred over SE QLD late yesterday
afternoon..

This section will be updated for any notable event that occurs in SE
QLD..

Hi all,
I was talking to my neighbour today, and she told me of a storm
she remembers back in the summer of 1969/1970 that hit the Gold Coast.
The details she remembers are:
1) The Corrumbin beach was completely washed away, with the adjacent
road collapsing.
2) Surfers Paradise lost its beach (all sand washed away)
3) Wind damage to buildings, trees uprooted
4) Tennis ball sized hail
In summary, all Gold Coast beaches suffered extensive damage to the
extent that sand and boulders had to be trucked in to rebuild the
beaches - being a huge setback for the local tourist industry. Does
anyone have info on what wx event occurred, how it formed, damage caused
and date/time? Please reply on the list or direct to my email address.
Cheers Peter (Didjman)

Hey all,
Firstly - GO THE BLUES (directed at all West Coast supporters)....
Secondly - anyone have any details about a severe storm in metro melbourne
on 21/2/82. I read in a train magazine that there was a severe storm on
that date which stopped trains for a while.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

The Tennis Ball sized hail and the beach erosion would be completely
unrelated, in fact it would be unlikely to happen within the same week even.
( one event likes wind shear the other hates it )
The first two would be Cyclone, tropical Depression or East Coast low
damage, I would say cyclone.
If you visit Michael & Jimmy's superb site at
http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/cyclones/history.htm I would
say that 1971 seems a more likely candidate.

This message in particular relates to the NSW members but should also send
a message to others on the list as well. Please read and absorb. I am not
being negative but I think there has been of late a very serious lack of
interest arising...I suppose this phase can be expected but perhaps not so
severe.
Well today we had yet another meeting here in NSW for September. Now the
meeting was enjoyed by those who attended....by those who did bother to
attend. Now I am sure a major part of the problem was the short one week
notice and I am to blame for this but I am sure that some others could have
turned up. I am baffled as to what can be done to help this almost crisis
situation!!!! New South Wales has the most members but today you would have
thought it was a South Australian meeting (no harm intended SA). In fact
both Queensland and NSW have had a disappointing turn out of late both in
terms of social events and video nights.
I know the NSW meetings were administration orientated but that has now
been minimised and will not take up too much time. This means you can
expect something to be discussed or perhaps a guest speaker to be invited
or a talk given by a member in most meetings from now on. Please note this
guys.
Here are some explanations, proposals and solutions to what I think may be
the problems.
-First, I think perhaps a yearly planner has to be adopted wherever
possible to help give some warning in terms of dates of future events
including video nights and other activities. Now, meetings in NSW will be
held normally on the first Saturday of each month but we were unfortunately
thrown around a little because of a planned venue change not coming on
time. Hopefully that will be ready by the first Saturday in October.
-I think there are members who are not reading the aussie-weather list
e-mails and therefore were not aware of the date today.
-Some people are not reading the ASWA newsletter. Now this relates to the
problem of people not reading the aussie-weather list e-mail. The solution
to this is for e-mail announcements to be e-mailed by the mass e-mail
member form sender. Please make use of this for ASWA items please. I think
mail will have to go out to those who are not on e-mail by state reps
sening snail mail or a simple phone call be made.
-People, particularly the younger members, work on Saturdays. There is no
real solution to this problem except perhaps keeping with the formal base
date as was suggested decided by each state.
-Some people have lost interest or just are undecided whether to go or not.
They then probably decide that they may turn up to the next one. Please,
try and turn up to as many as possible wherever possible. This allows for a
friendly exchange of stories, information and ideas. It allows newer
members to meet others and also feel part of a unique group. Your input is
extremely important. Even if you turn up for one hour at the beginning or
the end; that is better than not turning up at all.
- It is winter which means nothing is happening (for Qld and NSW) so a lot
of the members particularly in the eastern states will not think there is
much to discuss. Believe me, that is when you reflect on the past and
prepare for the future. Such ideas as how to take lightning photographs,
what to do in a storm chase, how can you storm chase effectively and
safely. Now these can be discussed during the non-active months of the year
by members. I would like to see more members giving presentations of their
be it brief and simple to help them get the confidence of some public
speaking and help spread the message if invited to a local meeting in a
club of sorts. I have done a few of these already and it is another way of
educating the public.
The main thing is that we are going through a phase and I think the
interest will spark up again. But this should not be somnething we can
expect during the winter months. I would like to see the interest
maintained throughout the year. If you have any ideas discussed or would
like something discussed in a meeting, please approach your State
Representative.
The key to success of ASWA is activity created by the members themselves.
You are ASWA.

Hi Jimmy here,
The next NSW ASWA meeting is going to be held on Saturday 9th October
1999. Now, the venue has yet to be decided but it is important to decide
the time we will have meetings.
We need to try and agree on a time that would suite most and people then
should try and honour these times and turn up to meetings. Now the current
times we meet is
9:30am and make it a whole midday affair...
The new proposed time will be after 5:30pm to allow people working and
playing soccer, jumping off cliffs etc to take part. Please indicate your
preferences to me please not replying to the list.
My e-mail is jdeguara at ihug.com.au
We are also going to have to send out mail to those not on the internet and
mass e-mail those not on the list. Please send me your comments and
suggestions asap by this Wednesday 15th September
Thanks from a much cooler

Please note if you wish to not be included into future e-mails regarding
ASWA (Australian Severe Weather Association) announcements, please reply
and indicate so. I am definitely not trying to spam anyone with such e-mail
announcements. I know just how irritating messages that keep coming even
though you are not interested can be...
Otherwise for those interested, a new time has been arranged for ASWA
meetings for consideration. Please indicate your preference. The most
popular one will win.

Hi me again,
Just another point which I am going to clarify. I think there needs to be a
little more communication between members offline as well. One thing I
would like to propose is for people that live near each other and know
others particularly off the list to keep each other informed of coming
dates as well as just chat on weather events. You could compare what
happened in your region as compared to others living nearby. You could also
car pool if the need arises.
We need to try and increase attendances back to the respectable levels
earlier in the year.

Hey everyone,
I sent a message to the list friday, however, for some reason it didn't make
the list, so here tis.
At about 1:45 yesterday, a heavy shower/storm approached from the south of
where i was (UWS Werrington). It was fairly dark, and their was a lowered
front as the storm was apporaching.
When i finished uni about 25 minutes later the storm has passed, dumping
only a brief shower of cold rain. So as I was driving out of the uni,
(looking north) I could see a very dark area of the cloud, so naturally I
enquired. (2:10pm) From where i was i could see a menacing looking front,
and a lowering, with a brown/pinky rain curtain. Associated with this
lowering was alot of swirling scud which was situated near the ground and
being quickly sucked up into the storm. Then over the next few minutes the
scud, grew denser, and organised itself, so now the lowering was broader and
more defined. It was it this stage i discovered my fatal error- no camera.
Then a block of cloud slowly spun out of the lowering. Initially it was very
coarse, and more like scud, but as the cloud descended, it became smoother,
and rotation was evident.
The size was hard to tell, i am bad with sizes, so i will direct you to a
picture of one like it
http://www.upnaway.com/~jra/funcld1.jpg
it was very similar to this except probably shorter in length by a quarter,
and a little thinner.
It lasted for 60 seconds. It slowly kept descending until it spun itself
out.
Then a minute after, another spindly funnel descended, very thin, like a
rope, but only lasted 5 secs. The same thing happened again before the
lowering basically broke up.
After reporting it to the BOM who thought, that it was 'interesting'., and
that they had been watching the 'cell'. The storm dumped a fair bit of rain
around cranebrook, so much so there was water over the road on Taylor Rd and
Londonderry Rd, and cranebrook rd.
An interesting piece of weather phenmonea.
