Hey all,
just back from working in lovely Eden, NSW and it's good to see some
activity over Melbourne (for a change!!!) Although, it seems to be weakening
as it approaches. It's mainly to the west of the city then sliding down to
St Kilda. Very frustrating here in Heidelberg, we've only had a few spots
and distant thunder also. There's that notorious dry belt stretching from NW
of the airport to the SE (including here) this seems to be quite common when
activity moves in from the NW toward Melbourne.
Phil.

Hi all,
I been noticing recently that the Airservices Australia NOTAM/MET Briefing
Service is often unavailable due to 'Error 0' (atleast for area 21 anyway).
Does anyone know what this is all about? It sometimes happens at the most
'critical' times!
Andrew.
PS Please accept my late apologies for the NSW meeting, it was looking
posible for a while there.

Hi all,
I seem to be having trouble downloading the latest lightning tracker image from
the Energex web site. The latest image it gives me is 16:16 on Tue 5 Oct. I've
tried pressing reload, and also Shift reload but to no avail.
Is anyone else having this hassle?
I sent an enquiry email to Energex a couple of days ago, but have not received a
response. Perhaps it's been changed so that a new image will only load if new
lightning strikes appear?
Can anyone shed some light?
Cheers,
Marty.

Well it turned out to be a good night for storms in Melbourne last night.
Went down to Elwood Beach on the bay at about 11pm to watch the line of
storms roll in. Some beautiful CG's out over the bay, just a couple of km
from me certainly kept me awake.
Had 24.3 mm for the 24 hours, a good fall. Though from what I've heard on
the radio the metro area had the best falls in the state so far.
We have now entered a quiet spell. Looking at the sat pic and radar Melb is
sandwiched between 2 storm/rain areas one to the east, and the very
interesting area of activity to the west. All the figures are pointing to
this area to the west showing some real potential as an upper level system
cranks up the instability later today. Although we could do with some sun!!!

Certainly looks bad for SE Queensland however. The news for NSW is looking
bleaker too with GASP just pulling the plug on the extensive trough system
for Thursday - Friday. Just the outside chance today for me in southern
Illawarra that something may drift north or east from the more suited areas
on the south coast and the slopes west.

Morning all,
Last night was fantastic and I owe Deano a HUGE apology cause I thought
nothing was going to happen last night. Still I think you shoulda got a
fairly decent lightning show. I was still watching lightning last night
from my house at 2am. Possible chase W today - I have things to do this
morning but we'll see what happens.
Hope all the VIC's got some SDS medicine last night and maybe more today.

Yes, I hope the Vics get out there and chase W to NW Victoria and follow
the system eastwards. Could be some interesting storms coming through.. I
actually believe north of the Grampians would be better to chase. There is
some blue sky out there..
Good luck this situation reminds me of the Januaray 1997 and November 10
1997 and also January earlier this year. The difference is that we have the
LI and CAPE to follow and predict these things if something really good
happens. Had I not been working tomorrow, I would met up with the Vics from
yesterday in readiness!!!!!

Hi all, a good sound and light show over most of Melbourne
last night which continued on and off till about 4am. Most Melbourne suburbs
received between 20 and 30mm, the city itself had 31mm, we got 21.4mm here in
Kilsyth. Overcast with light rain here at the moment (11.30am) but as Jimmy said
cloud is breaking in western and northwestern areas of the state and some good
storms could develop there this afternoon. Just a reminder the Raging
Planet series on CH 7 this Monday night at 7.30pm is featuring Lightning so that
could be interesting.Dane (Kilsyth) Melbourne.

Hi all,
I was at 4BC (radio station) this morning for a live interview - my
grandmother was able to record this for me. So I've been able to record
it to the computer, and upload it. It's just under 8 mins, and is about
3.5mb. The interview was predominantly about ASWA, but also touched on
a few other things. I've been invited back for future interviews too.
4BC found out my contact details from a newspaper article I was in,
which incorrectly said I founded ASWA, so 4BC said the same thing - but
I attempted to rectify that during the interview.

Just heard the interview from Anthony. Excellent!!!!!!1 I mean excellent.
But just one point. Don't try and uncover things eg suggest they are wrong
re who set up the association. That does not worry me. Just get the
information across you have to and let them believe what they want to believe.
Once again... excellent.

Yes, it's stuck on that for me too. I guess they are having some
problems with it or something.
It has happened before i think... We will just have to wait and see.

It looks like a pre-frontal rain band has helped raised dew points near the
surface through W Victoria which in turn may be aiding the development of
the storms there this afternoon. Otherwise, the NW stream is very dry and
unstable near the surface. But most of the moisture has been advected from
the Indian Ocean in the mid levels hence contributing to the rain band.
Looks like it could be a storm chaser's delight this afternoon since the
winds look favourable for supercells. Only it still may be a bit too dry...

.Well what an interesting two nights in good ol storm starved Adelaide. On
the 8th of Oct, a small storm was observed from St. Kilda a small township
North of Adelaide, the storm was about 5 to 10 km NW of out position but
many CC, CG and Anvil crawlers were visable in a storm that lasted for
about 2 hours, no rain fall guages were reported. On the 9th and 10th a
steadyly growing storm was observed firstly on radar then visually. Again
we drove to St.Kilda for an observation before deciding to see if we could
get closer for some lightning photography and videography. This prooved to
be a good idea, we stopped on a road headed towards Pt. Gawler, and waited
for the sorm which was only a few km's away. After setting up camera and
Video Cam, we watched as the storm steadily came closer and closer. We
ended back inside the car as we seemed to be almost the highest point in
the area, only a pole about 20 metres away would have prevented us from
being hit. By this time lightning had almost surrounded the car and we were
unsure where to look next. Eventually the rain came, and did it come down
hard and fast, I took a few photo's from inside the car, but I am not
expecting them to turn out.
We watched this thing for a good 3 hours from start to finish and ended up
back in Adelaide where the storm was passing over before moving off to the
ESE. I am very happy with this storm it was the most photogenic storm for
the year I hope we get more :)
Rain fall guaging for this storm is unknown, but I am sure someone would
have the information.
I wonder if any of the other SA ppl were able to get a good view of this
storm?????

THE AUSTRALIAN SEVERE WEATHER ASSOCIATION INC WEEKLY NEWSLETTER -
Issue 12
The Australian Severe Weather Association Inc (ASWA) is here to
provide a platform for discussion into severe weather, research and
education. A lot has been written about about Australia's severe weather
in the past and you can view many different stories of people's
experience with the weather in the offical ASWA magazine "Storm
News". Discussion about the latest weather and a great place to
learn from is the aus-wx mailing list from which ASWA Inc was originally
formed. The mailing list is filled with people who are eager to help
teach others about all aspects of meterology and to share their
experiences.
Membership into the ASWA Inc is $30 a year (with access to the Bureau of
Meterology's radar and a quarterly subscription to "Storm News) or
if you don't wish for radar $20 a year (with the quarterly subscription
to "Storm News" still remaining.) Both visitors and members are
welcomed to attend State Meetings. State Meetings are held in Western
Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland in
their capital cites. Members can also have the chance to buy an ASWA

QLD's ASWA Media Coverage Continues - by Anthony Cornelius
I was at 4BC (radio station) this morning for a live interview - my grandmother was able to record this for me. So I've been able to record it to the computer, and upload it. It's just under 8 mins, and is about 3.5mb. The interview was predominantly about ASWA, but also touched on a few other things. I've been invited back for future interviews too.4BC found out my contact details from a newspaper article I was in, which incorrectly said I founded ASWA, so 4BC said the same thing - but I attempted to rectify that during the interview.

Weather News
South Australia
On Friday night, Storms were spotted out to sea West of Adelaide. Later reports of thunderstorms came in from Metro areas to the North and North-East.
On Saturday night, a nice cell developed and split in 2 just near Ardrossan on our Radar image, so after observing it for about 15mins out to see we headed North on Highway 1 and watched it come in and surround us. Adelaide Metro areas had a very nice thunderstorm for well over 2 hours causing nice CG's CC's and Anvil Crawlers This was filmed on both still camera and video camera by Andrew Wall, and Kathryn Jolly.
Western Australia
Perth fell to 996hpa last Thursday with gale force winds causing 35,000 home to be blacked out. SES attended to about 160 calls mostly being houses with roofs blown off. Strongest Gust recorded was 113kmph at Rottnest Island. Perth city recorded it's 5th wettest day.
Queensland
Severe storms moved through parts of SE QLD on Monday October 4, bringing down powerlines and uprooting trees. 20 000 homes were blacked out at one stage. Surprisingly enough there was no large hail reported to the BOM, with only pea size hail reported from a storm that formed during the late afternoon over the SW suburbs of Brisbane. Widespread moderate-heavy falls were reported over the entire SE QLD district, with the heaviest fall being 72mm at Toolara.

A thunderstorm over Melbourne last night produced some good lightning and continued on and off till about 4am. Most Melbourne suburbs received between 20 and 30mm of rain and the city itself received 31mm.
Jane, Andrew, Nick and Claire have been out chasing again for most of the day today. Last I spoke to them they were at One Tree Hill near Ararat. Fingers crossed they give me a quick report for next weeks newsletter.

Lovely squall line of storms setting up from Wagga SE to Tumbarumba, may
make it across the ranges for our Canberra friends, but doubtful anything
will reach as far north as storm starved Illawarra.
Some scattered storms west of Melbourne, I hope the guys went to the border
and got some action, there was definitely a severe storm or two in that lot.

east quite fast, there's an intense storm west of Lorne in the Otways (dark
red on the Radar). Hoping for a repeat of Sat. night.(22.5 mm at

Yes I have been watching this with some interest.
At 9.20 pm it is losing intensity fairly rapidly - so it will be
interesting to see what arrives here in the next couple of hours. I just
went to my storm observation point near home which has a good view west
without too much light pollution. I couldn't detect any distant flickering.
There is a lot of fast moving low scud skating across from the NW so
visibility is pretty obscured and hopefully there are some active cells out
there still.
We will probably get some showers and maybe a few lightning strokes in
Canberra but I am not expecting much more.
Patrick
PS I found both lots of interviews pretty interesting - it will be
interesting to see how much additional interest in ASWA will be generated by
the increasing media exposure.

Hi all. Guess today is my lucky day. Three storms in two days directly
over head. As I am writing this a storm is passing over head heading
in a South Easterly direction (I think) with frequent CC lightning but
no audible thunder. It is a great looking storm lit up by the cities
lights. I can kind of make out a cirrus form anvil, however, any exact
description can not be made for obvious reasons. Chase season is finally
here!

Hi once again. That was one great storm. The storm moved directly
overhead and once the main downdraft was overhead, lightning increased
to about 2 a second. It produced a beautiful light show with CC
lightning. It was also a very large storm. It has been overhead for
about an hour to an hour and a half with strong rain. It is just
starting to move away now with no lightning visible. What a great start
to the season! Did anyone else catch it?

Storm just clearing the ouer eastern suburbs now good display
of mostly cc lightning, some loud thunder only 1 or 2 seconds gap between
thunder and lightning at its peak (about 10.30pm here in Kilsyth), heavy rain
and some small hail. Also wind gusted up to 25 knots(estimated) at times. Dane

Hi all,
Nice little storm in Melbourne tonight. I got torrential rain and a
great lightshow here in Carlton but, judging by the radar, I didn't get the
heaviest part of the storm. Any reports of hail?? The winds here were gusty
but not damaging. Most of the lightning I observed was cloud to cloud but one
CG appeared to strike the Dandenongs.
It ain't no supercell, but it'll do............ for now!
