Heard on the ABC (3LO in Melbourne) just now - Dr Karl Kruzyniski(sic)
saying that the safest thing to do in a thunderstorm is to "crouch down as
low as you can & stand on one leg"(I don't think my anatomy will allow me to
perform this)..........and BTW, what are you meant to do with your head???
Anyone else have any - we need to give Jimmy some more ideas for his humour
collection & the MSC SDS page could use them.

Some recent rain in northern SA and adjacent areas has put a bit
of a hole in some very low annual rainfall totals.
In particular, Marree has picked up 12.4mm this month, taking its
annual total to 41.9mm, above its record low of 39.3 (1967).
Alice Springs (76.4) is still below its 1965 record of 82.1.
Birdsville (72.4) is well above its 1961 record of 33.2.
Coober Pedy (30.8) has just crept over its 1929 record of 30.6
(although I have doubts about the quality of this record)

Hi all
It's all happening. A day of rain around here with thunder during the
morning. Just had a heavy storm with the odd close CG (some ok CCs on
video) - about 10-12mm in 7 or 8 minutes. Because of the saturated soil
around here the run off from this storm has been huge. Over 30mm here
today.
Anyway, check the radar and the tracker
(http://www.energex.com.au/external/lightning/page.htm) - there's more
coming in from the WSW - I can see the lightning quite nicely now.
Any other Brisbane people? What's happening?

Hello Storm Chasers.....
I had a great afternoon in Lismore today...we were broadcasting a statewide
programme from the ABC Studios here. I used the ASWA Radar to pinpoint
storms as they popped up and we asked for people to call in all afternoon.
There was one bloke from Malaney near Gunnedah who said there was a savage
one hit hit with hail the size of apples which lasted for half an hour,
piling it a couple of feet high on the ground, smashing up houses and
flattening wheat crops. For half an hour after the hail he received 300mm
of rain which has caused flash flooding in the region.
We had a BOM guy on air at 5PM who did not flinch at the use of their
weather radar data on the programme....and in fact the information which
did go to our listeners was backed up by the BOM.
The radar is accurate....and it didn't do a Monica Lewinsky on us when we
needed it!!
Cheers Halden.....
PS looks like the Far North Coast could be the place tomorrow arvo...the LI
and CAPE are looking good at this stage

Wow, apple sized hail. Did he take any photos??? It'd be very
interesting to see! Great work getting people to phone up! Did you
keep any notes of what as happening? If you get a chance, make sure you
input these into the ASWA t'storm database!

300mm in 30mins!!!!!!!!! Are you sure about this????

We had a storm to our north this morning (Ben from Redcliffe had much
more action from this then I did though). While coming back from the
bakery this evening, I noticed some very bright flashes from the cell
that was approaching you. I then took my spotting position, only to be
treated to 2 more bright flashes, and then it appeared to have 'died.'
However, another bright flash in my rear-view mirror after I left,
proved that it was only waiting for me to leave!
There's another nice line of showers a t'storms to the WSW of Brisbane,
moving ENE. If it does get some more organisation to it, we might even
see a STW - but right now, it looks like the only threat is from flash
flooding (as you mentioned earlier).

Speaking of tracker, I was talking to Energex earlier today, and was
informed there were 2600 whites on the entire QLD tracker!!!

tomorrow (15th Oct) and I will endeavour to get the bloke's contacts...with
a bit of luck he might have taken pics.
I can remember him saying "it looked like an ordinary storm until I heard
the noise [hail] then it continued for half an hour. After that it rained
and all of the hail melted and consolidated in blocks of solid ice and we
had 300mm of rain in 30 minutes". The interviewer James O'Brien asked "have
you been able to have a look at other areas around Melaney??" Reply: "I
haven't been able to do anything because of all of the flash flooding
around here".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He said the storm hit at around 1.30-2pm and I gave a warning to the
Gunnedah area thru the ASWA Radar at 3pm. There was a huge cell in that
region I predict was 10-20kms in diameter.
Cheers Halden
300mm in 30 minutes! That's 10mm a minute. It certainly puts doubt into the
Yo Halden,
Without wanting to cast aspersions, I had radar on all day at HQ and while
there was certainly slow moving storm cells & rain areas in this region, I
did not see any echoes which would be consistent with this amount of
rainfall. 30mm in half an hour might be believable. I have seen rainfall
at a rate of 150mm in 30mins and that came from a Supercell with a height
over 20,000m. While it might be possible to reach 300mm in 30mins, I can't
imagine what it would look like, and what kind of storm it would take to
produce it. You sure he was not measuring a hail drift?
Here at Mt. Crosby, we had distant thunder this morning, and rather closer
thunder & lightning early this evening around 7:30pm. No CG's observed,
although we briefly lost power due to a strike near Ipswich apparently
taking out something important. In summary, drizzle all day, heavy at
times. Rainfall total since midnight last night is currently 23mm. And
don't the frogs like that.
Still seems to be some rain & lightning in the Stanthorpe area, so we get
some more yet.
John.
Hi all
Anthony C suggested (and I agree) that maybe he meant "points" - many
farmers still talk in points which I believe is a quarter of a millimetre.
For example, 300 points = 75mm. ---> 75mm in 30mins isn't so
unbelievable! Very very heavy rain nonetheless.
How
much of the 2 hours was actually filmed?
Hey Ben from Brisbane here..
Believe it or not 17 500 people are without power after the storms went
through Brisbane this evening.. over 40 suburbs effected, mostly on the
south side of Brisbane.. no reports of any severe weather at all to the
BOM though.. so my guess is all the power cuts were caused by
lightning..
After a storm here early in the morning around 8am (2-3 close Cg's and
probably 10-15 rumbles over half an hour or so) embedded in a rain band,
i thought we might be in for a good day in SE QLD.. it didn't pan out
like i expected it to, but we ended up with a fairly nice line of storms
this evening anyway.. I got some heavy rain here, and mostly infrequent
lightning (most of it sheet lightning - up to 1 per 4-5 seconds at one
stage).. all up 37mm from the days activity, with 13mm in the morning
rain/storms and a further 24mm from the latest storm..
4 storms for me in October so far over 2 thunder days.. not too shabby i
guess.. we've had better starts to the storm season but who's
complaining..
Hi John and all,
Halden kindly phoned me this evening, and we had a small discussion
about it. I proposed that the farmer may have actually meant 300 points
(75mm), which while still is a heck of a lot of rain, is perhaps much
more beleivable (given that from memory the official world record of
rainfall in 30mins is "only" 280mm, recorded in Hebei, China)
Marty from Brisbane here.
Woohoo!! The curse has been lifted! I feel like I haven't seen lightning for a
year, and it was glorious to stand out in the heavy pouring rain and watch the
sky light up, fiiiiiinally! A couple of reasonably close strikes (about 1km away
from me in Bowen Hills) got me all the more excited with the beautiful crash of
loud thunder. The guys at work thought I was an absolute nutter as I bounced
inside completely drenched to the core with a grin a mile wide on my face!
Murphy's Law did apply, however, whilst taking photos. My cable release is quite
temperamental (closing the shutter before I ask it to) and I missed a couple of
beauties right in front of me. Nevertheless, I got some nice crawlers on film
which I'll get developed tomorrow.
I'm so relieved! I was starting to worry about my most unwanted storm repelling
talent.
Cheers everyone,
Marty - a very happy camper.
Well, if there had to be a sounding lately suggestive of severe storms, it
would have to be this morning's Moree sounding (10am - 00z) which shows a
large area of CAPE (I think about 1400J/Kg). However, the wind profile
could be better.
Got a phone call from Barry at the BOM today informing me that the BOM got
3 calls of a funnel in Perth. It started in Fremantle and was observed for
20mins by one guy, the last report of it was past Canning Vale which is
about 20k's or so inland. No pics that we know of but. It was at about
9:30am and Barry said nothing that great showed up on the radar but to last
that long it must have been resonbly strong. That takes funnel sightings in
Perth this winter to about 20 now.
