Hi Deano and all,
ABC dubbed this as a "mini tornado," - channel 10 decided that they
wanted some variety, and called it a "twister," a "mini-cyclone," and a
"mini-tornado."
The damage was quite severe - apparently a gust of 122km/h was reported
(?) - by the damage I saw, the maximum winds were much higher than this,
possibly nearing the 100kn/185km/h mark - certainly on the upper end of
the 100's anyway.
There were some power poles bent to the ground - I'm assuming they're
steel, and some houses were badly damaged/almost demolished - with
cars/trucks flipped over. Sounds/looks like a tornado to me - but in
the report they said "residents said it was all over in 10mins" -
normally one would describe the worse damage and say "it was over in
30seconds" for a tornado.
What really needs to be done, is a damage assessment survey on the
area. I couldn't help but notice how close Snowtown was from Adelaide,
only 145km north - a little over an hours drive. Perhaps one of the
Adelaide people would be interested in going up there and surveying the
damage/taking some photos and observations of how the damage was
alligned/distruted/occurred to try and get an idea on whether it was a
tornado, or a microburst. If 2 or 3 or you get together, you'll save
heaps of money on fuel.

Hopefully this sends ok this time around. Sorry for any multiple messages.
Hi everyone,
I would like to remind all of those interested in the next coming NSW
combined ASWA-AMOS Weatherwatch meeting. This is to be held at Macquarie
University on Wednesday15th December. The room is E5A143. There is the
usual parking but you must bring along change for say $4 so you don't get a
fine. The meeting begins at 7:30pm. Of course there will be the usual
refreshments there at the meeting.
Some may be interested to go to the Middle of Nowehere Resturant for a
brief supper before the meeting which begins at 6pm and then we move on to
the meeting from there. This is optional for those who have the time. If
you are interested in going to the dinner as well then please contact Alan
Williams via e-mail at least by Monday 13th December so that he can get a
good grip on numbers.
Alan Williams alanjwilliams at ozemail.com.au phone 02 94889975
The main theme of the meeting is to discuss recent severe storm events:
particularly those of the End-Of-Year major storm chase undertaken recently
by some ASWA members. There will be open discussion as well as commentary
and video footage. We do suspect one of the supercells produced a tornado
and there is footage of the dust whirls and funnel observed by the chasers
and the excitement that go with it!!! You will also enjoy the spectacular
squall line footage and its story. So come along and have a great time and
meet others with a similar interest to yourself. There will be photos as
well so don't hesitate to bring yours along.
Of course, both visitors and members from both ASWA and AMOS are always
welcome. If you have never come along or have not been for a while, do come
along. Your attendance is very much appreciated and you are guaranteed to
enjoy yourself.
See you there next Wednesday 15th December. I am going to the dinner as
well lest I forget..

On the strength of the radar at 10.30pm I drove to Gerroa. Set up for some
lightning shots. Storm line was very pronounced whilst it was still west of
Nowra area. My guess is the Nerriga / Sassafras area would have seen action
a plenty.
A Massive convecting gust front developed whilst taking the pics, leaving
the storm some 20km back behind it !!. Storm weakened as it passed coast.
Radar looks lame again at 12.30am, however I am hoping for some new activity
around Kiama, the region where the guster petered out, although it has not
done anything yet.

Michael,
That's the suspect. This was about the first time I first saw it. About
ten minutes later the top of the funnel had moved closer to the rain shaft
but the base was being blown further away.

Looking at the 'before' and 'after' broad loops one can say that:
*The storm seemed to maintain its severity for over 3.5 hours and several
hundred km
*It formed ahead of the main trough line
*Hard to say because of the low resolution, but possibly there's evidence
of splitting, circular propagating echos and other severe features
Yesterday was one of those terrible days where no-one was available to
chase an obviously severe storm quite near Adelaide (sob ;()
Good luck on your 'damage search' on friday Andrew...

I just heard an interview on ABC radio with a farmer who was in the
Snowtown storm. Poor guy lost his entire $200000 crop. He said he'd never
seen or heard anything like it and had to shelter with his dog under his
ute in his shed while said shed disintergrated around him! He still
sounded absolutely shattered.

There was a scheduled (but unadvertised, until the very last minute)
web server outage 1230-1300 today. Should be OK now.
(The Bureau's internet connection seems very slow again today, though).

A follow-up to the mail I meant to send to Jane yesterday but managed
to send to the whole list by mistake....
I'm currently stuck for a front cover photo for the December AMOS
Bulletin (which I edit) and thought that there might be something
worthwhile from the chase. If there is anyone who can get something
in electronic format to me by tomorrow (either as an attached GIF
file or something I can download fron the web) that would be
terrific.
Whilst I don't have space for it this issue, I would also be keen to
run an article about the chase - maybe something in the 2-3 page
range - in the next issue (due February 2000). If anyone who was on
the chase is interested in writing something, please contact me.
Thanks,
Blair Trewin

I have just come back from a local chase. A huge guster
smacked into Blaxland/Lower Mountains at around 2pm. It dropped 30mm in 10
minutes in Glenbrook. There is 15 foot gums trees down all along the great
western highway and the road cut westbound at glenbrook. The base of the storm
seeded to be very active and dynamic. More later. Matt is out at quakers hill

Very lame here in southern Illawarra ( the storm proof hole of the universe
), just some light rain, not even thunder. Holding off for a chase as the storms
are NW of Sydney which means a 2 hour drive through Sydney.
There is another line out near Yass I am keeping an eye on, I will try for
that if it gets to Goulburn.

Very spectacular storm front moved through this arvo here (N Ryde,
Sydney). Lots of lightning (plenty of CG's) and gusty winds after the
front passed over - low cloud racing across sky after front - was a bit
worried about destructive winds for a while.. Another storm coming
through right now, lightning close by have to go...

4pm and another great storm strikes - built up very rapidly. Torrential rain,
many CG's. Lots of shear in
a very unstable environment. There must be a few bombs out there......

Storms have already passed through NW Sydney and heading for the coast. I
wouldn't bother chasing squall lines in Sydney. It looks good for the next
few days and hopefully Saturday would be great for the northern Central
Tablelands. We will see when it gets through later as things change very
easily.
The weather has been very sultry lately with some good shear. The storms
once they started just went straight up. I managed a shot out of my
classroom window. I was so excited walking around the school this arvo as
the storm line neared. And we have a Year 10 Formal tonight. I had told
some students of the doom and gloom this arvo. They won't be impressed.
Yepp Jimmy will probably miss out on any lightning show as usual.

Hi all,
Just thought I'd mention to those who might be chasing in the next
couple of days/driving around/driving to the ASWA Christmas BBQ on
Sunday that the police are clamping down over the next three days,
having an extra 30 police patrolling/speed trapping motorists. So if
you're out and about (and especially if you're storm chasing, and
thinking of trying to do a bit over the limit to catch a storm), you
might want to think twice, especially to those (like me), who are still
on their P's and only get 4 points :(

Heya everyone
I was waiting until something developed near Oberon, to drift SE across the
western suburbs, so when a big area of yellow formed near Oberon, i was
off!, got to Rooty Hill to see a guster forming, lightning every 20 seconds
or so, snapped a pic before it started raining and jumped in the car...
after a couple of phone calls, the system was really moving, and warnings
had been issued, I was going to follow the M4 eastwards and follow it to the
coast.. but i didnt bother as it would probably beat me, and i wouldnt be
able to stop for photos near peak hour.. so i went up to Quakers Hill to get
on the northern side of the storm where another weak guster was forming. I
found it hard to take photos because of tree's/houses/powerlines everywhere,
and when i came across a park, it was on a main road with no side roads to
park !! (frustrating). These things were moving very fast, scuds getting
sucked up and CG's everywhere.. great stuff!!
I ended up back at the Mobil near Rooty Hill, met up with Greg Browning and
Gabby (i rang them and told them to meet me there earlier). From there we
just sat it out watching the lightning and listening to the thunder, with
the rain pissing down.
We decided to go to the Uni of western sydney at penrith to check the
radar/sats etc.. it had basically turned into rain, so we parted ways back
home.(The melbournites were exctatic to get a 1/2 decent sydney storm, big
grins on there faces :)
Total chase distance 120km.
Thanks to Jane ONeill, James Harris, and Daniel Weatherhead for ringing me
with updates, most appreciated guys, i will return the favour one day.
Looks like Daniel got it at its peak, when i would have taken the 1st photo
of the storm 30mm in 10 minutes or something is great!!
Matt Smith
PS> im up to 7 storm days in a row here.. hope i can make it 8 tomorrrow!

Up and down like a yo-yo since 0410Z. I've not seen it this unstable
for a long time. Even the msla archive got clobbered at attempted
downloads 0400Z, 0500Z and 0700Z. After Telstra's experiences with
Windows NT failures today, all I can say is "perhaps the BOM are
potential VOMITs - Victims Of Microsoft's Information Technology":-)
Then again, it could be unfortunate Telstra data services flapping
away again...I'm shooting for VOMIT instead...

Scored three different storms today from 4.30pm onwards, near Robertson and
on to Picton. The first storms gust front actually convected into a fresh
storm just north of Bowral, then similar near Picton. Torrential rain from
all and strong winds from the first. Strange lack of electrical activity.
I will probably have some video stills up by late tonight.

On the trivial side...is this a new record for affected areas??
This advice replaces the earlier advice issued at 1601 and now
affects people in the following weather districts:
Mid North Coast south of Kempsey
Northern Tablelands south of Armidale,
Northwest Slopes and Plains
Sydney Metropolitan, Illawarra, Hunter
Upper Western east of Wanaaring to Cobar,
Central West Slopes and Plains
Central Tablelands,
Southern Tablelands north of the ACT,
South West Slopes north of Cootamundra
Will be looking for some action in Wollongong soo from a front near
Goulburn - somehow doubtful though. Refer to Michael T's earlier
email...hehehe

Channel 10 actually used the word 'supercell' with regards to the Snowtown
storm on the news tonight. That would be a first for this state methinks.?
Also some footage of the damage shown. Pretty amazing. Houses unroofed,
entire patches of scrub stripped of leaves with one side pummelled by "hail
craters", iron power poles bent flat (!), trees all over the place (hard to
tell if there were any signs of rotation), several horses killed by hail
unfortunately (ouch). The crops I saw weren't damaged - they were GONE -
the paddocks looked like they'd been ploughed.
Hopefully Andrew will be able to secure some interesting photos tomorrow.

Hi Everyone,
I observed todays storms from work in the city. It was great to watch the
gust front roll in from the 23rd floor. It was very impressive looking
particularly on the northern end and once it had passed over the rain became
so heavy you could hardly see the building next to you. At one stage I was
looking out the window and you could see vehicles sending up huge sprays of
water. There was quite a number of loud rumbles of thunder which must of
been extra loud outside as my building is pretty well soundproof. Before the
storm hit I also saw a number of strong CG's.
At home (Blaxland) the storm hit at 2:05 pm and 35mm was received. The
maximum wind gust recorded by my weather station was 23 km/h from the WNW at
3pm. The maximum gust from the more intense storm in terms of rain was
20.9km/h from the S at 2:15pm. Maximum rainfall intensity was 91.2mm/hr for
the period from 2:10 to 2:15pm.

Did you see the footage of the storm front as well??? It looked bloody
huge, and very, very dark. I hope I can track down the photographer of that
one, I plan to spend around 3 hours there but I can stretch it to 5pm
before I must head back for the meeting. One farmer also said that the
front of the storm seemed to roll back on it'self, sounds so far like a
very strong gust front, but I hope that by talking to some of the farmers
in the area we can come to some conclusions in the near future.
I will have video of the damage as well, but will only be taking video
footage of damaged sheds etc with the farmers permission etc.. I don't want
to go poking around peoples houses that have been destroyed, I think they
have had enough trauma for one week. I hopefully will get to chat with a
possible storm spotter for the BoM in the area as well, if I can find their
farm :) must remember to take map with me :)
I have to be careful though with the media, BoM etc.. poking around the
Farmers might be a bit hesitant in talking, but then again, some farmers
are quite happy in talking, just have to pick the right way of approaching
them.
Well this is my last email until I get back tomorrow, so will let you know
how I go..
regards
Andrew
