It sounds like it's about as believable as those who say that the
earth's tilt is changing due to the weight of water being stored in
large dams.
Where is the proof based on observed and measured facts for these
things?

Hi all
I got myself out of my sickbed to go online and check the satpics and radar.
I was surprised to see quite a well developed low in the Coral Sea near
Willis Island. Nothing on JTWC yet but the BoM did mention a 1006hpa low in
the Coastal Strong Wind Warning. It'll be very interesting to see what pans
out.
Good Satellite Images: http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/satimages/gmsd.jpg (IR)
and an image/animation: http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/GOES/gms5ir.html.
Change the 'ir' in the URL to 'wv" if you want a water vapour image - quite
spectacular.
By the way, due to health reasons I won't be making it to Saturday's Qld
ASWA meet. I'm sure it'll be very successful; my apologies for not making
it.

Or by nuclear explosions ...
Having read the article in the BBC website and in the UK Guardian there
are indeed a few problems with this thoery:
(i) ball lightning has been observed in aircraft - where's the
silica / silicon there
(ii) BL has been observed in submarines - no silica and indeed no lightning
Also I believe that temperatures higher than those found in a lightning
core are needed to reduce silicon dioxide to pure silicon even though a
suitable reducing agent is present in a ground strike (carbon in the soil)
but then how are the high temperatures maintained afterward - AFAIK there
are no reports of BL burning holes in walls!
It's possible that there is a silicon core to some BL events in NZ but
perhaps a core of pretty well anything will do - as demonstrated by Golka
a few years back - if you've seen Electric Skies you'll know what
i'm talking about.
How this paper made Nature beats me!

Hi everyone
Unfortunately there has been some problems with emails to the webmaster
being redirected to me. After a lengthy discussion with Mike Fewings a
couple nights ago, we have worked out a way for me to download any
emails that have been sent through.
I have uploaded the winners for the January competition for everyone to
have a look at and people are more than welcome to send photos for next
months competition to me any time. Until we solve the problem with
redirecting email, just send your pictures to my email address at
hawk at iinet.net.au
Also due to the problem with redirecting, I will give everyone until
Monday night to submit any images for this months competition to me.
Remember the topic is "Storms in motion - rain/hail falling with strong
winds - trees being blown near to the ground, that sort of thing."
The topic for next months competition is "Lightning - CGs, CAs and CCs".
With this more than likely being the most popular section, remember that
the limit is 5 images per person. I look forward to seeing what people
have to offer for the competition

While I have visited Kuwait on business, I have never lived there. I had
to take a look at the climate before I went, and the following was as I
recall my inquiry. (I make no guarantees! [S])
Kuwait is an arid climate (less than ~ 12 cm or rain yearly). No, I don't
believe it has ever snowed there. During the oil field fires the weather
was certainly modified but, to my knowledge, there have not been any
lasting affects on the regional climate. The smoke and ash from these
fires have long since been diffused throughout the atmosphere, globally. I
am sure the rocky and sandy surface around each fire was also discolored by
the fires for some period causing some local heat absorption beyond the
norm, but even these resulting local weather effects have been relatively
minor and insufficient to cause a lasting climate change. Volcanoes, such
as Mt. Pentatubo (sp?), produce far more climate impact owing to the gas
content (sulphur dioxide and other sulphur compounds leading to sulphuric
acid formation at very high altitudes, etc.), and to an extent, the ash,
reaching altitudes over 100,000 ft.

Hi James and List
Noticed the low - which BoM are calling a trough, presumably to prevent
spooking the locals - on Townsville BS radar loop this morning. It has
certainly stirred up the shower activity in the area.
Proserpine 27.5mm to 0600 EST yesterday,
A further 41mm this morning.
Reported falls up to 340mm near Mackay, and 40 to 100+mm common on the
Central Coast, and more to come no doubt as the system drifts south and
west.
Keeping the temperatures down though - some southerners might look to come
north for the summer the way things are looking down there !
Winds off shore gusting to 50knots, but mainly 20 to 30 according to BoM -
no off shore fishing today ! Might chase a barramundi up a creek seeing the
season opened Feb. 1 last, and try for a mud crab or two. Oh woe.
Then again, there are a few prawns about too .......... decisions,
decisions.
Sun's shining - catch ya later.

What I was referring to, Lindsay, was that there could be considerable
differences in temperature between exposed ridgetops and sheltered
high frost hollows as cold air pooled in calm conditions. Katoomba has
managed a minus 8.2 at some point in the past 30 years of computerised
record (my records don't have the date), but I suspect that would have
been at the old Mort Street site in North Katoomba, which is in
something of a hollow. I doubt the current site, close to the
escarpment on Cliff Drive, would produce such a reading.

To the surprise of no-one, given the 40-degree maximum yesterday and
the 8/8 cloud cover, it was an exceedingly warm night in Melbourne -
at least until the change went through at about 7.30 a.m. (which means
that the night won't go in the record books). Prior to the change the
lowest temperature recorded was 29.9 - had the change not come through
before 9 it would have been the second-highest overnight minimum on
record for Melbourne, after a 30.5 in 1902. (The 24-hour minimum is
lower again, 22, from the 0900 reset yesterday).
Having said that, there was a very similar, but even hotter, night
on 11-12 January 1982, on which it did not drop below 32 before a
7 a.m. cool change. The 3-hourly temperatures make an interesting
comparison:
1982 2000
2100 37.0 35.3
0000 34.0 32.3
0300 32.9 32.8
0600 32.2 29.9
0900 22.2 25.6
There were at least two minima of 30 recorded in Victoria (at Swan Hill
and Echuca), narrowly missing the state record for February (the 30.5
at Melbourne mentioned above) and any month (30.7 at Mildura in 1955
and last year).
The cool change seems to have reached East Gippsland now, but I'll
be interested to see what places like Orbost got to before it arrived.

Hi Everyone,
Its certainly a scorcher here today. Current
temperature is 38.6 (3:50pm) and the highest so far today has been 39.2 at
3:30pm. This morning it was really humid but once the hot westerly wind began
the air has dried right out. There is not a single cloud to be seen anywhere in

Yes I can say it is hot and would definitely have hit the 40C mark today.
Lack of wind killed the chance of getting much hotter. Currently 39C
outside and no sign of change.
About the report, my chase report for the Inverell hailstorm chase with
Matthew Pearce is online. Even looking at the pics is worthwhile. Boy I

I don't know a lot about the specifics of the local topography at
Coffs Harbour. The common thread with most of the coastal sites in NSW
that have NOT recorded near- or sub-zero minima seems to be either
or both of:
(a) an elevated or clifftop site (e.g. Point Perpendicular, Smoky
Cape, Nobbys Head)
(b) water in the vicinity through more than half of a 360-degree circle
around the site (e.g. Observatory Hill in Sydney, any island site).
Coffs Harbour doesn't have either of these; neither does Port Macquarie,
and both have been below 0. Interestingly, most of the sub-zero minima
at Coffs Harbour have been recorded in the wake of cold SW outbreaks
with snow on the highlands (their record low, in 1966, was set as part
of an outbreak that brought snow to low levels in NE Victoria and the
Riverina), rather than under anticyclonic conditions of the 1970 type
(when most records in northern NSW and southern Queensland were set).
This is also the case at Brisbane Airport, another site that gets
somewhat lower extreme minima than one would expect so close to the
coast (had the instruments been in their present site at the time,
rather than a somewhat warmer one, Brisbane Airport would probably
have recorded several minima in the 0 to -2 range in the early 1970s;
the homogenised set I use in climate change analyses, which is
adjusted to take site changes into account, has an estimated -2.0 at
Brisbane Airport on 27 June 1971).

The new site is at the airport. I don't know much about the local
topography - I'm working off the relationships with other temperatures
in the area. On several nights with low minima in 1997 it was getting
very similar minima to Woolbrook (a frost-hollow site south of
Armidale), so I would expect that its extreme minimum will ulitmately
be similar to Woolbrook's -14.5, given a long enough record.
As I think I've said before on this list, the coldness of New England
is very under-rated because of the poor standard of the observation
sites in the main towns - Armidale's was surrounded by a bitumen
car park and Glen Innes PO was next to an incinerator! (Not as bad
as the old Mount Barker PO site in SA, at which the last inspection
photo featured a 4WD parked between the screen and the rain-gauge, but
close). Now that both sites have moved we may get a more realistic
picture of the regional climate. (Armidale's site is still within the
town area, but is on a vacant block).

I'd expect this to be the case, probably more so in the major valleys
(which are mostly uninhabited, of course).
I am, however, quite sceptical of the -8.2 at Katoomba in June 1977
because of a lack of any support from surrounding observations
(e.g -1.0 at Lithgow). The July and August records of -5.4 and
-5.6 respectively seem more realistic.

Hi everyone,
It certainly was a hot night here in Victoria last night and
this morning. The Bendigo Airport AWS min temp was 27 (rounded). This I
think is a record for this site (opened Oct, 1991), not just for February,
but all summer months. I recorded 26.3 in my Stevenson screen which is
located in central Bendigo. From my thermograph trace, the temperature had
fallen to 27 deg by 12.30 am, and by 2.00 am had risen to 31.4, before
falling to the minimum temperature at just after 8.00 am. Based on the
digitised data for the old Bendigo Prison site, which was also located in
central Bendigo, the previous highest minimum temp. recorded was 26.0 on
January 17, 1960. The digitised data only dates from 1957, where as the
complete Bendigo climate record dates from 1862.
Rod Aikman,
Bendigo, Vic.
There have been some spectacularly high morning
temperatures for Victoria, this morning.
At 5:25 am we have:
Tullamarine: 32.6
Scoresby: 31.7
Melbourne: 31.5
Mildura: 31.9
Swan Hill: 31.7
Yarra Glen: 30.3
Mt Nowa Nowa: 30.3
And for Alpine areas:
Mt Baw Baw: 19.0
Mt Buller: 18.0
Mt Hotham: 17.2
Falls Creek: 16.3
For NSW Alpine areas:
Crackenback=1957m (5:00am): 16.0
Any records broken, Blair?

Does that mean all AWS's from around the country? or perhaps a large
proportion of them? That certainly would be good. Well worth the loss of
the more frequent obs from selected area.
Another hot day in sydney today, 39 in ashfield. temps were into the low
40s further to the west. I won't know what the exact temps were until after
9am tomorrow though.
Tomorrow is forecasted to be back below 30 again (high 20s). but not for
long, maximums should rise throughout the week, perhaps being back up in
the high 30s or maybe more later on in the week.
