Dear Andrew
No thunderstorms here but we did get a fair bit of wind. The wind probably did
not get as strong as forecast but there was a lot of small branches littering
the ground this morning. Last night (about 10pm) on the radar there was a bit
of activity in Bass Straight showing green and pink did you see any of that?

Not the most ideal conditions for storms but we are heading out to try the
area NE of Mudgee and W of Muswellbrook. What is making it difficult is
that the satpic is not working. Bugger. I have tried to work out where the
good area is with the CSIRO satpic.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all those who attended the NSW meeting. We had 17 in attendance
which was excellent: one of the better NSW ASWA meetings take out the AGM.
Members and visitors thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A special thanks to
Paul Graham for his talk on the 18th March 1990 supercell and supercells in
general.
For those who couldn't attend due to transport arrangements, I am trying
very hard to arrange car pools and getting you into contact with willing
participants. Hopefully we can encourage more members to be able to attend.

G'day Chas,
No, I didn't look at the radar....I was at the "local"
consuming a beverage or two for St. Pat's day! The
wind did certainly pick up once the front moved
through. It's good to have a little action considering
how quite it has been latley.
Regards,
Andrew.

Hi everyone,
Some may recall the End of Year chase with brief tornadic circulation on
day 3 of the chase. Some people may have asked me to produce the video for
them but I have tried to get out of it because of the work involved getting
it dubbed from the 8mm tape to the VHS tape. But there is good news now.
I have been in contact with Tim Pascoe. He says if I can get the order of
those who would like to purchase a copy of the footage on tape, he could
get it mass produced based on the number of copies wanted. I felt this
could be a money raiser for ASWA as well. By charging $15, which is what I
charged Anthony, then we could raise say approximately $5 per tape (or
perhaps more) for ASWA (I will see what the overall costs are).
Now what I need to see is a show of interest from those who are interested
to purchase a copy to e-mail me jdeguara at ihug.com.au
If the cost doesn't work out, then the deal falls through. However, it
should be ok. So if you are interested, please e-mail me in the next few
days. The footage I showed last night was clear.

At 9.30am, I can see some very nice, sharply defined cells from Canberra to
the WNW of Yass - showing up nicely on the radar at the moment
We have bright sun at Canberra at the moment with lots of AC and it is very
humid (DP of 19).
Any chasers from Sydney coming down the Hume towards Goulburn could have
some fun intersecting the cells coming across from the west.Being on the
northern edge of this cloud-band which is broken anyway might be the best
bet. It looks like it could be a good day...

In Canberra we are just about to experience our
first storm of the century - it has been a while coming...
It is a very large structure and quite slow
moving - so I think the emphasis will be on rainfall totals rather than any
other aspects. (I am looking forward to the Wagga radar coming back on-line
shortly to see it properly - it looks quite big on the current radar even though
it must be on the outer edge of what the Sydney radar can pick up.
Some nice CC's and thunder now being heard. It's
quite exciting - not having experienced a storm since early
December.
Rain is just starting at my place at
11.45am.

The radar loops as at 01.20UTC show quite an impressive rainband from
the western Riverina right out to sea 200km E of Wollongong/Moruya.
Steering is from due west, and the way the storms are developing as
they hit the coast is worth a look. A rain gauge 150km or so offshore
would be doing good business, with heaps of yellow, green and pink
echoes. Also, good echoes about 100km either side of a line from well
west of Cootamundra to Goulburn. Satpic loops show rapid development
of a large Cb area 100-200km east of about Ulladulla from 1800UTC to
00UTC -- presumably in the decaying trough. 6mm at Yanco was the best
9 to noon rainfall, followed by 5 and Cootamundra and 3 at Albury.

Nice thunder and lightning show here at Blackheath, around 5mm to
2:50 pm. Nothing major so far but fun nonetheless, more thunder now,
better get off...

Thanks Don for your assistance with centuries,
milennia etc...
I should have learnt my lesson some time ago -
if you want to kill a off your chances of a nice storm, then all you have to do
is tell this list - with confidence - about what a great storm you are ABOUT to
have....
While slow moving storms can produce large rain
totals if they are above you, they can also fall apart before they get to you.
That is what happened this morning - it looked very black to the west - we did
have a nice lightning and thunder show (for which I am thankful) and then it
dissipated just as it arrived overhead.
I think both topography and time of day didn't
help.
We are just to the east of ranges of up to 1400m in altitude -
so there would have been a slight rainshadow effect (slight because the slow
movement of the system presumably means less topographical impact).
The time of the day - just on midday (DST) - is not great as
the system did not have the benefit of solar heating itself and was just
starting to compete with updrafts from areas that had been subjected to
heating.
A further rainband arrived about an hour ago - with a little
more thunder at the start. We now have light rain periods (just over 1mm
recorded since 9.00am).

at last...!!
In Canberra we are just about to experience
our first storm of the century - it has been a while coming...
It is a very large structure and quite slow
moving - so I think the emphasis will be on rainfall totals rather than any
other aspects. (I am looking forward to the Wagga radar coming back on-line
shortly to see it properly - it looks quite big on the current radar even
though it must be on the outer edge of what the Sydney radar can pick
up.
Some nice CC's and thunder now being heard.
It's quite exciting - not having experienced a storm since early
December.
Rain is just starting at my place at
11.45am.

The 00z run of the AVN is extraordinarily wet for the NSW coast, with
50 to 100mm from the Illawarra north to the mid north coast from late
tomorrow Monday through to Wednesday. The run strengthens the high
over Tas with a strong ridge up the coast and a developing trough off
the coast; all this interacts with the moisture band that's around at
the moment + LIs of -3 to -6 early in the piece.
Well worth a look at
http://www-pcmdi.llnl.gov/fiorino/wxmap/avn.ausnz.htm
The 00z run GASP is similarly wet, though LAPS is much less so, not
strengthening the high over Tassie so much. EC I haven't seen. NOGAPS
00z is pretty lukewarm, bringing a good SE flow onto the coast, but
with amounts about half those of AVN.

There was some local flooding in the area, could not call the BOM because of
the mobile phone block.
Rainfall varied in area a great deal. Some lightning and thunder, but total
overcast made chasing a non event.
